New Year thoughts

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)
We have come to the end of another year, a time to take stock of what we have accomplished this last year and what we plan to do in the year to come, a time to make New Year's resolutions and determine to do better. But how often do we take only a temporal view, looking at natural things? How much better to take stock of the eternal things. We have a God who is our father, we have a Lord who 'can sympathize with our weaknesses...who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin' (Heb 4:15), we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us to guide us and be our comforter and helper, we have the fellowship of other believers to help us to grow into the fullness of the stature of Christ,we have a living hope and an eternal inheritance, we have all things needed for 'life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence' (2 Pet 1:3)--I could go on and on and on. Let us stir up within ourselves that excellent gift of faith that the Lord has given us, and enter the new year with our eyes focused on things above, not on things of the earth.
