John Chrysostom wrote, "And we shall be able...to remember what has been said...if we always betake ourselves to prayers as a refuge, and beseech the God who gives the Word of wisdom to grant both intelligence in the hearing and a careful and unconquerable guardianship of this spiritual deposit in our hands. For things which often we have not strength to perform successfully from our own exertions, these we shall have power to accomplish easily through prayer."
One of the areas of prayer which should be a priority is studying the Scriptures. On our own, how can we comprehend the Word of God? Our own minds are not up to the task, but as we approach with prayer and seek the Lord to enlighten us, He will grant "intelligence in the hearing". We can pray as Paul in Ephesians 1, that He will give us "a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him", for unless he reveals the Word to us, how can we know? The word is Logos (the written word), but only His spirit can make it Rhema (the spoken word) in us. He brings to life the 'dead letter' and makes it a 'living and active' thing within our spirits. Our "careful and unconquerable guardianship of this spiritual deposit in our hands' requires us to acknowledge the limits of our intelligence and to walk 'humbly with our God.'
